“Review of Christian Books | The Late Great Planet Earth” reviews Hal Lindsey’s book. It has been around since 1970, and it is still popular and relevant today.
I first read this book in the 70s as a youth and found it very fascinating. However, this second reading is much clearer as prophecies come to pass in our generation.
This is similar to reading the Book of Revelation. It’s even more relevant than reading today’s newspaper. For example, we have a better understanding of events that seemed only symbolic many years ago.
But, the development of technology has opened up our eyes to understand what these symbols now mean. Thus, the mysteries of the end times are unfolding before us.

Brief Review | Chapters 1-4
Chapter 1: Future Tense
This chapter talks about fortune tellers, astrology, and other similar interests. It discusses human’s constant quest for knowing what will happen in the future.
The author also mentions Bible prophecies in comparison to other future tense claims. Moreover, it’s interesting to understand the signs of the times.
Chapter 2: When Is a Prophet a Prophet?
Hal Lindsey explores the test of a true prophet as laid out by Moses in Deuteronomy 18:21. “When a prophet speaks the name of the Lord, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word which the Lord has not spoken.”
Prophets such as Jeremiah, Micaiah, and others all made predictions that came true in current and future times.
Chapter 3: Do We Really Live and Learn
In this third chapter, we see the prediction of two phases of the Messiah. The first was the Suffering Messiah, and the second the Reigning Messiah. The first was rejected because the Jews were looking for the Reigning Messiah.
They failed to see that there were two comings of the same person. Will we make the same mistake for the second coming? The predictions of both appearances are written together in the same prophetic books of the Bible.
Chapter 4: Israel, O Israel
Israel has seen the persecution of its people, captivity, destruction, and rebuilding. All of this happened in accordance with the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies.
The Jewish people are back in their original land and a few prophecies are yet to be fulfilled. These are the rebuilding of the third Temple. There’s also Armageddon, and the second coming of the Messiah–Jesus Christ.

Chapter 5: Russia Is a Gog
Hal Lindsey expounds Bible prophecy to trace the modern-day reference of Gog and Magog. This is Russia (Magog) and its Chief (Gog) which will invade the land of Israel with many allies.
It may have seemed far fetched previously. However, there’s indication that Russia and its allies will at some point be in a position to launch war on the people of Israel.
Chapter 6: Sheik to Sheik
This chapter continues to reveal how things will unfold in the Middle East. And, more allies will be formed against Israel with claims to recapture Palestine. These players include the northern and southern countries.
God’s hand is in all this as He draws them together against His people for their ultimate deliverance.
Chapter 7: The Yellow Peril
The kings of the East join in the battle against Israel. And the Euphrates River also plays a huge role in this scenario. More accurately, it’s the drying up of the Euphrates River.
China is predicted to fulfill the role of the 200 million soldiers involved in this end-time war.
Chapter 8: Rome on the Revival Road
Another prediction is that there will be a revival of a form of the Roman Empire. And, it will be the seat of the ruling Antichrist in the end times. Many attempts were made to bring this to light. So far, all attempts have failed.
However, there will definitely be a resurgence of this rulership which will probably take many by surprise.
Further Reading | Chapters 9-11
Chapter 9: The Future Fuehrer
The Antichrist’s antics are revealed here. He will have the power given to Him by Satan to deceive the whole world. People are desperate to have a leader who promises what they’re looking for.
Despite the denial of Jesus as the true Messiah, people will readily accept this false messiah and his false prophet. However, he will show his true colors in the middle of his seven-year reign.
Chapter 10: Revival of Mystery Babylon
Mystery Babylon is the representation of the end-time corrupted worldly system. This system will be very attractive and powerful. Many people will indulge in the things that satisfy their fleshly desires.
These are not new “under the sun” but will be revived to the dimension of an international revolution.
Chapter 11: The Ultimate Trip
The Rapture or translation of the Church, true believers in Jesus Christ, takes place before the beginning of the Great Tribulation. This is the view of Hal Lindsey and others who believe in the pre-tribulation rapture.
It’s the glorious hope of Christians whether they believe it will happen before, in the middle, or at the end of the tribulation period. Revelation and other books of the Bible emphasize this will happen for certain.
Final Section Review | Chapters 12-14
Chapter 12: World War III
This war is inevitable and will lead to the main event at the end of the world as we know it. But, that isn’t the end of humanity. Instead, it’s the end of the evil mankind has inflicted on itself and the environment.
Jesus Christ, the only hope of salvation will finally fulfill all the Biblical prophecies written about Him. Many scriptures are clear about these events. However, some still remain a mystery.
But, most of all the hearts of human beings are hardened against the things of God. This hardening will continue even when the truth comes to light.
Chapter 13: The Main Event
This chapter sums up the characteristics of Christ’s return to set up His Kingdom and rule the earth. It is characterized as Paradise restored.
Here is the culmination of the four great world kingdoms predicted in the book of Daniel chapters eight and nine. In other words, Christ’s Kingdom will come and defeat the final corrupt kingdom.
Chapter 14: Polishing the Crystal Ball
As we look ahead, we see signs of the times as proclaimed in Biblical prophecies. There are believers, non-believers, and people who do not know what to believe. And there is false teaching in the midst of all this.
The Late Great Planet Earth ends with the word, “Maranatha” which simply means Jesus is coming soon. Therefore, we must be ready and on the look out as our redemption draws near.
